Small business website checklist: 15 things every site needs

A 15-point checklist for small business websites in Singapore: content, contact, mobile, speed and basic SEO. Check your site in 15 minutes.

A good small business website does a few things well: it says clearly what you do, proves you are trustworthy and makes it easy to contact you, on a phone, quickly. Use this checklist to review your site in about 15 minutes. Each point explains why it matters and what to check.

Content and trust

  1. A clear headline. Within five seconds, a visitor should know what you do, for whom and where. Example: "Home-baked custom cakes in Tampines. Order by WhatsApp."
  2. Your services or products, with prices or price ranges. People leave when they cannot tell what something costs. If prices vary, say "from $X".
  3. Real photos. Your shop, team, products and finished work. Stock images make a site feel generic.
  4. Reviews or testimonials. Real quotes with permission, or a link to your Google reviews. Never invent them.
  5. An About section. Who you are, how long you have been going and why customers can trust you. A photo of the owner helps.
  6. A short FAQ. Answer the questions you get every week: pricing, timing, delivery, payment, cancellations.

Contact and action

  1. A very visible contact option. Phone, WhatsApp or a form at the top and bottom of every page. A tap on a phone should open a chat or call.
  2. A working enquiry form. Test it yourself, and make sure the messages reach you and you reply quickly.
  3. Your address or service area, and opening hours. Match them exactly to your Google Business Profile.

Mobile and speed

  1. Works well on a phone. Text is readable without zooming, buttons are easy to tap and nothing is cut off. Most visitors will be on mobile.
  2. Loads quickly. Compress large photos. Test with Google PageSpeed Insights and fix the biggest problems it shows.
  3. Uses HTTPS. The address should start with https and show a padlock.

Basic SEO and tracking

  1. A clear title and description for each page. The title is the blue link people see on Google, so include what you do and where. Keep titles under about 60 characters and descriptions under about 155.
  2. Linked to your Google Business Profile, and the reverse. Put your website on your profile and your business name, address and phone number on your site, identical to your profile. See our Google Business Profile guide.
  3. Simple tracking. Install a free analytics tool, and set up a way to count enquiries, such as WhatsApp taps and form submissions, so you know what works.

Bonus checks

  • A short privacy notice if you collect names or phone numbers. Check the Personal Data Protection Commission's guidance for what applies to your business.
  • A favicon (the small icon in the browser tab) and a shareable preview image
  • Working links, with no error pages
  • A backup of your site and a clear owner of your domain and logins

Frequently asked questions

How many pages does a small business website need?

Many small businesses do well with one to five pages: home, services, about, contact and sometimes pricing or portfolio. More pages only help if each has a clear purpose.

Do I need a blog?

Not at the start. Get the basics right first. A blog helps over time if you write useful answers to questions your customers ask.

How do I test my site on a phone?

Open it on your own phone and on a friend's, on mobile data as well as Wi-Fi. Try to do what a customer would do: find prices and contact you.
